This study aims to examine the effect of philanthropic behavior type on life satisfaction and depression of older adults. Analysis data were obtained by conducting an online survey targeting 612 older adults aged 55 and over nationwide. Propensity score matching analysis was performed to form three treatment groups (only giving group, only volunteering group and both giving and volunteering group) and untreated group. We analyzed the mean differences and multiple regression. As a result of the analysis, the philanthropic behaviors generally had an effect on life satisfaction but had no significant effect on depression. In addition, life satisfaction was found to be related to social factors such as participation in social groups, and depression was related to personal factors such as health and economic level. Based on the research results, it was suggested to the long-term cumulative effects by various types of philanthropic behaviors, verify the effectiveness of philanthropic behaviors, and improve participative approaches for older adults in the field of social work.
